Removing comments and markup
What Counts as an Annotation?
In the PDF format, an annotation is any markup layered on top of the page content rather than baked into it. This includes highlights, underlines and strikethroughs, sticky-note comments, text boxes and callouts, rubber stamps, freehand ink drawings, shapes such as rectangles and arrows, and measurement markups. Because annotations sit in a separate layer, they can be added or removed without altering the underlying document.
This tool walks through every page, finds each annotation object, and deletes it. The result is a clean copy of your document with the original text, images, and formatting intact but all of the review markup gone.
When You Need a Clean Copy
- Finalising a reviewed document: after collecting feedback, produce a clean release version without the comment clutter.
- Sharing externally: internal reviewer notes and highlights should not travel to a client or the public.
- Printing: sticky notes and comment markers can print awkwardly or obscure content.
- Re-using a template: clear last cycle's annotations before starting a new review round.
- Archiving: store a definitive, markup-free record of the final document.
Annotations vs Form Fields vs Redaction
It helps to distinguish three related ideas. Annotations are review markup that this tool removes. Form fields are interactive inputs like text boxes and checkboxes, to make those permanent and non-editable use the Edit PDF or Sign tools. Redaction permanently blacks out and deletes sensitive content underneath; if your goal is to securely remove confidential information rather than review notes, use the dedicated Redact PDF tool instead.
Privacy and Quality
Annotations are removed at the object level, so there is no re-rendering and no loss of quality in the page content. The upload is processed on the server and deleted automatically a short time after you download the cleaned file.
