What Grayscale Conversion Does
Converting a PDF to grayscale replaces every colour on the page with a shade of grey ranging from white to black. Photographs keep their detail and contrast but lose their hue; coloured text and charts become readable greyscale equivalents. The result looks the way the document would appear coming out of a black-and-white printer or photocopier, only you control it in advance and can verify the output before sending it anywhere.
This tool renders each page in the gray colourspace at high resolution and rebuilds the document, so what you download is a true grayscale PDF rather than a colour file that merely looks grey on screen.
Why Convert to Black & White
- Cheaper printing: many offices and print shops charge far less per page for monochrome than for colour.
- Consistent output: guarantee a document prints the same on any black-and-white device, with no surprise colour pages.
- Smaller files in some cases: dropping colour channels can reduce size, especially for image-heavy pages.
- Accessibility and clarity: remove colour that does not carry meaning, leaving clean tonal contrast.
- Faxing and archiving: grayscale is the natural format for scanned and archived records.
A Note on Quality and File Size
Because grayscale conversion rasterises each page (renders it to an image in the gray colourspace), the output is image-based rather than selectable text. Pages are rendered at twice their native resolution to keep text crisp and readable. If you need the text to remain selectable, keep your original and use this tool only for the print or archive copy. For maximum size savings on a grayscale file, run it through the Compress PDF tool afterwards.
